Teens, Social Media and Depression
The social media has risen to be a powerful medium highly used for communication with
the young adults and adolescents highly involved and playing a significant role in utilizing it. The
technologies of social media offer new media which are exciting with the young adults and the
adolescents being successfully employed in engaging this group. Teenagers all over the country
use cell phones, the internet and video games to communicate and gather information (Lenhart et
al., 2010). The power and ability to interact with their fellow teens are a unique feature of the
social media that substantially offers and provides new ways which are powerful for the navigation
and creation of social environments. The use of social media among the adolescents occurs
simultaneously regardless of their development in identity, physical development, emerging
sexuality and moral consciousness. Overly, the use of social media is greatly related to many
benefits including the development and health status of the teens.
Many teenagers utilize the social networks to extend their relationships which they already belong
to from different areas of their lives which include religious organizations, school, sports and also
other local activities. The social networks offer the teens with a filling of connectedness and
provide opportunities in which the teens learn from each other. The social media offer supportive
surroundings and environments to explore social status, friendship, and romance while at the same
time developing an opportunity for the teens to discuss and share their tastes in knowledge of
movies and television, music and other teen culture aspects (O’Keeffe & Clarke-Pearson, 2011).
The sites of social networking allow young adults and teens to seek for support online which may
to some point lack traditional relationships more so the teenagers who have been marginalized.
They perceive the social networks as a basic source of advice and information during their
development process. The adolescents also make use of the online searches to get answers related
to illnesses and health concerns about dieting and physical fitness.
While the use of media is pert which is integral through the daily lives of the adolescents,
there are risks originating from the use of the media. The risks involve mental health, sexting,
cyber bullying and sexual solicitation and also exposure to illegal and problematic content
regarding the violations of privacy. There has been gap closing for the populations who use
technologies which are new. The time utilized by the teens when in media has risen sharply (Pea
et al., 2012). High profile and quality resources need to be allocated to libraries and schools to
help them in the adoption of strategies of risk management and also about a provision of education
concerning issues related to online safety. Technological solutions and providers on the internet
which include Yahoo and Google require continuing associating with parents and various policy
makers with an objective of creating awareness and privacy opportunities protection to the youths.
Mental and medical providers of health need routine screenings to evaluate the risks for
depression which significantly consider the media use of the teens. Schools need updating
guidelines for media literacy for the purpose of including information which is explicit regarding
participation which is successful with media forms which are new. The forms of social media have
significantly altered how the youth learn and socialize and also how they set education issues.
