DIRECTIONS
Watch the Milestone 2 tutorial by clicking this link. This tutorial is also available on Course Project page
under Course Home as well as Week 4 Assignments page.
This paper is expected to be no more than four pages in length (not including the title page and reference
list). Below are the requirements for successful completion of this paper. Please use the following categories
as the first level headings on your paper. See the documents in the APA category in Course Resources for
assistance with APA formatting.

[Introduction:] This beginning of your paper should catch the reader’s attention with interesting
facts about your community and should include the purpose statement of the paper. This should be
one paragraph. APA states that you should not title this as introduction; however, you are still
expected to write a separate introduction. The title of the paper should be repeated at the top of
page two and centered.
Community Overview: Identify the community that you are assessing by name and state and
provide a general description of the community. What is the general character of the community?
Statistics should not be included here. Your community should be the area you live or work in and
should include a residential area. It should be a large enough area to answer the questions in the
text. This should be one paragraph.
Demographic Data: Compile a range of demographic (population description) data for your
community by examining U.S. Census Bureau reports. Using this data, describe your community.
Compare your community data to state or national data. A summary of this data should be no more
than two paragraphs.

Epidemiological Data: Compile and summarize a range of epidemiological (illness, morbidity, and
mortality) data for your community by examining data from sources such as city or county health
department reports, County Health Rankings (countyhealthrankings.org), or the Centers for Disease
Control to describe priority health problems in your area. See the Webliography for applicable sites
to search. Compare your community to state or national data. This comparison will help to identify a
priority community health problem specific to your community. A summary of this data should be no
more than two paragraphs.
Windshield Survey: Provide a summary of your observations from your first milestone. Make sure
to discuss observations related to your identified problem. This should be one to two paragraphs.
Problem Diagnosis:
o Using the assessment data, identify one community health nursing problem that you
consider to be a priority concern.
o Relate your choice to one of the Healthy People 2020 specific numbered objectives (not just
a goal). Healthy People objectives are located within a topic area under the Objectives tab.
o Your rationale should also include why this is a problem in your community and factors that
contribute to the problem. Avoid discussion of interventions in this milestone.
o Include a discussion of your problem with information from at least two scholarly sources
(such as professional journal articles). (Review the documents in the APA category in Doc
Sharing for help in determining sources that are considered scholarly—hint, .com websites
are not considered scholarly sources). This should be no more than three paragraphs.
Summary: Summarize your community assessment and diagnosis findings and include a brief
statement about the problem and the major factors that contribute to this problem. This information
should be no more than two paragraphs.
Reference Page: All references should be cited within the paper and should be included on the
reference page.

Miami, is at Florida’s southeastern tip, it is a vibrant city whose Cuban
influence is reflected in the cafes and cigar shops that line Calle Ocho in
Little Havana. Miami Beach, on barrier islands across the turquoise waters
of Biscayne Bay, is home to glamorous South Beach, famed for its colorful
art deco buildings, white sand, surfside hotels and trendsetting nightclubs.
Miami-Dade County encompasses more than 2,000 square miles (larger
than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware). One-third of Miami-Dade
County is located in Everglades National Park. Our community is located
along the southeast tip of the Florida peninsula. It is bounded by Biscayne
Bay and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Everglades National Park to the
west, the Florida Keys to the south, and Broward County to the North.
Miami is very populous where people are very visible, and population is
the diversity of the people, in terms of ages and race is very apparent. This
diversity is due to the port in the land that has become the key entrance
point for people from various places. The setup of global businesses has
also contributed to the diversity of the Houston residents. Majority of the
residents are able bodied and generally look healthy. However, due to the
fast pace of the city life, signs of fatigue and mild depression or stress can
be visible on the some of the adults’ faces. Miami being a port city and a
beautiful place, there are many tourists, who accelerate lifestyle vices like
too much alcohol drinking, smoking and even use of illegal drugs. In the
urban outskirts the pace is slower, families, kids, and pregnant women can
be seen strolling and playing in the parks. Compared to the main city
dwellers, these residents look calmer and almost happier.
Miami-Dade County has experienced a steady and rapid population
growth, particularly in the1960s and 1970s. Population doubled from 1960
to 1990. Projected growth through 2025 is expected to follow a similar

trend, at a somewhat slower rate. The principal driver of population
growth has been and will continue to be immigration. Net immigration is
projected to reach over 240,000 persons in the period 2020-2025.
Clearly the effects of immigration over the past 41 years have dramatically
shaped the ethnic composition of Miami-Dade County. It is expected that
there will be a more moderate augmentation of Hispanics as the
dominant ethnic group over their current 61 percent level.
Miami-Dade County, has 28 hospitals and more than 32,000 licensed
healthcare professionals, it has the state’s largest concentration of
medical facilities, which provides comprehensive human and social
services through an array of programs. Hundreds of thousands of
residents take part in a wide variety of county programs including
emergency assistance, mental health care, substance abuse treatment
and prevention, homeless shelter, veteran services, and other traditional
social services.
The environment in the Miami is a bit mixed. With the environment in the
city being congested and polluted by different gaseous emissions. The tall
buildings, many vehicles and high population make the city feel so
crowded and the environment is very unconducive, a typical city
environment. The outskirts of the city are best, with fresh air, vegetation
and trees teeming from everywhere. These green areas make life very
comfortable for the lakeside residents.
The society in Miami is very functional with churches, mosques and
temples focusing on offering the people a variety in religious background.
In education, the city has over 432 private schools. Other vanguard
schools focusing on health professions, performing and visual arts among
other sciences. Major universities in Miami include Florida International
University, University of Miami, Barry University among others. People in
Miami enjoy watching their games at the American Airline Arena, Sunlife
Stadium and Marlins Park. The Sawgrass is the largest mall in all of Miami.
Art Lovers visit the Miami museum of fine arts. Let’s not forget we having
a booming cruise industry as well. Miami is full of flavors to please every
palate there is Cuban, Haitian, Jamaican, Greek, Chinese, and Trinidadian
to name a few of the different kinds of restaurants for your dinning
pleasure. Miami is rich in culture. Not to mention the Everglades, beaches
and lakes for all the watersports you could think of.
People in Miami are divided about healthcare. I believe this is due to the
diversity of the city. There are Cubans who take healthcare for the most
part seriously, Haitians and Caribbean’s seek help only when there is a
serious medical issue, no preventative measures. Because Miami is a
melting pot the attitudes about health care vary from overly conscious to
not concerned at all.

3. Conclusion: (20 pts)
Provide a summary of
your findings and your
conclusion. What
problems did you
identify?
Miami Dade County, has the advantage of year round warm weather. This
may contribute to better health, but in the summer and fall months’ heat
can be a deterrent to some outside activities. Walkable communities can
increase health by providing shady and safe modes of transportation. Data
for Miami-Dade County residents indicates there are health concerns
related to weight and physical activity.
In Miami-Dade County, 33.5 percent of all adults reported no leisure time
physical activity and 64.9% were overweight or obese. In Miami-Dade,
181,425 people have diabetes and 25.3 percent of all persons were
diagnosed with hypertension in 2007.
Miami-Dade County’s rate of uninsured for the population from 18 to 64
years is higher than the state’s rate. Most of this population is above the
poverty levels which does not entitle them to government programs
leaving most coverage to employer-based insurance. Due to increasing
high costs, many companies are choosing to provide limited or no
insurance. Privately held insurance rates are also following the same trend
and preexisting restrictions makes it very difficult for families to purchase
them independently.
