part 1
The text is entitled Travels with My Ex, and the author Susan Straight compiled it. The
subject matter of the story is that the author gives an account of the activities that she and her exhusband took in southern California. The main reason Susan straight completed this project was
mainly to portray how the issue of racism is eating into the society that we live in. It was to
depict that even after significant efforts have been put in place, racism is till apparent in the
modern world. The audience that is intended for this story is the teenagers and the young adults.
One reason for this is that because straight profoundly describes her daughters especially the
Baller. This is to incorporate her in the issue. By using the baller, she depicts how the young
generations are affected by the issues of racism. Also, this the children had to undergo the same
discrimination that the parents were going through. Another thing is that the story also meant for
the middle aged. This is because, from the story that most of the characters are mainly in the
middle aged bracket. This is the group with the most perpetrators of racism especially the police.
The text created in California. This may be used to show the injustices that are encountered with
the law enforcement in California. Also, this can be depicted by the numerous encounters with
the police.
Part 2
The author efficiently and comprehensively develops the theme of the racism. She does
so by revealing bits of information for the reader. It is these bits of information that help create a
bigger picture of the whole story and assist the reader in integrating the story in the appropriate
manner. Another thing is that the progression of the story is systematic which allows the reader
to follow the events of the story and visualize the concepts that are presented in the story. For
instance, at page 204 the story progress through a trip to the vacation. This gives the reader a
platform with which she could follow the story. Another thing is that straight develops the
perception of her ex- husbands from a history. She recounts the events that occurred in the past
to help the reader develop a clear mental picture. One thing that evident from the tale is that
Straight does not use direct statements to point out the theme of the story. Rather she develops
her story by recounting the past events. As such the reader can be able to discover on their own,
get a wider understanding of the theme which is racism. Another example on page 208 is that
throughout the story she does not depict bitterness. Rather she employs a rather calm tone
throughout this could be an attempt to the ethical appeal illustrate the moral appeal of the story.

I Am Malala
Part 1
The name of the speaker in my daughter Malala is Ziauddin Yousafzai short video production by
Ted talk. She is a young girl and her name is Malala Yousafzai and she is from Pakistan. As a
child, she became an advocate for girls’ education; According to Ted talk .“On October 9, 2012,
a gunman shot Malala when she was traveling home from school. She survived and continued to
deliver out on the importance of education.(13:20)” and in 2013, Malala was nominated for a
Nobel Peace Prize and won becoming the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Malala is an aspiring girl whom struggle and fought for rights of women with her family in
closed communities, patriarchal and tribal societies. The purpose of Malala story is that both men
and women are unequal. In addition, the speaker elaborates by stating how the girls have to do
everything their parents say without complaint inequality. The author identifies and caters to
various audiences such has high educated people, people who are considered decision makers
and, parents in patriarchal and tribal societies. The speaker focus in Malala story is that women’s
rights should be included in an imbalance of patriarchal and tribal societies. Also, Malala is a
wonderful story of a family uprooted by worldwide terrorism, of the fight for girls’ education.
Part 2
A theme in Malala story is a grief and stress, Malala struggled treated unfairly in society. In
Pakistan, women and girls are subject to stay home while men and boys go out into society to
attend school or their careers that was distressing in Malala lives. For example, in the video at
this time (2:23s), when she was five years old while she should be going to school to learn, she
stayed at home alone and her brothers are admitted into school. Until the age of 12, she had a
normal life. She can have fun, play with her friends in the streets, but then she cannot because
she is a girl and this example shows us how the grief and stress in Malala life. Another example
of the grief and stress in Malala life is that when she becomes a teenager at age 13 years old, it is
taboo for girls to go out of her home without a male guide. She was confined to the four walls of
her home, how the parents were thinking to leave their daughter like that. She was no more a free
individual during the video at this time (2:50s). Lastly, at this time (4:44s), Malala has to accept
the decisions of her parents, even if she does not like that. If she has married to a guy, she does
not like, or if she has married to an old man, she has to say yes without complaining, because she
does not want to call as disobedient. In the final analysis, at this time in the video(0:34s)
patriarchal societies and close society, right from the very beginning, when a Malala is born, her
birth is not celebrated, that developed Malala story and gave the audience an idea how Malala
suffered. Moreover, She was not welcomed, either by her father or by her mother. The
neighborhood comes and commiserates with the mother, and nobody congratulates the father.
Also, her mother is very uncomfortable for having a girl baby.
Part 3
In The Underwater Welder graphic novel by Jeff Lemire, the protagonist Jack faces problems
about his past and how he deals with them. In the both text has the similar theme such as grief
and stress. The author’s central main idea is that people sometimes over think the past and that
starts to destroy their current life and damage their future. Jake was over thinking what happens
in the past then he forgot the past and completed his life. In contrast, in Malala story at this time
in the video (11:12) she did not give up and complete her education even after Taliban shot her.
Also, both of Malala and Jake at the end there continues their life normal without thinking about
what happened in the past. Moreover, that is an excellent example of grief and stress in the
Malala story that represents the suffering experienced when she was struggling for women rights
and at the same time fighting for rights of women with her family in closed communities
patriarchal and tribal societies. An example of grief and stress is expressed in the novel, Jake
shows a difficult moment of trying to remember his father; he seeks a place from his memory to
remember every single detail about his father appearance such as his face and how his big ears
used to stick out. This made him feel guilty because he did not remember his fathers’ face.
