Academic Writing Essay
Part 1
Often times people culture finds challenges and difficulties when obtaining services and
assistance associated with psychological, sociological and emotional distress. Authors and
theorists have created developmental rhetorical concepts that outlined basic challenges for
overseas Filipino workers and their children’s Ingmar embedded within their social challenges.
From personal challenges of cultural acclamation and education to societal challenges of
acquiring therapeutic treatments, OFW children face extreme challenges according to article
titled” providing psychological services for children of overseas Filipino workers.” Overseas
Filipino workers and their children often face emotional situational circumstances as a result
social’s cognitive perceptions that ultimately hinder their cultural acclamation. The other text is
Travels with My Ex essay that is mainly about racial discrimination. My Daughter, Malala
speech is aimed at elaborating the issues of gender discrimination.
Part 2
“Providing psychological services for children of overseas Filipino workers” by Tarroja
and Fernando is a text with the recurring theme of loneliness among children of overseas Filipino
workers (Tarroja and Fernando 202). The object of study in this text is defining the challenges
faced by these children as they access psychological assistance, hindrances to these process and
the services these psychologists provide. Tarroja and Fernando intent in writing this text were to
highlight the said challenges to a target demography comprising of parents, children, and the

fraternity of psychologists. The purpose of this essay is to analyze comparatively the rhetorical
elements portrayed by the authors of the text “Providing psychological services for children of
overseas Filipino workers” and the texts “My Daughter Malala” and “Travels with My Ex.”
In the texts “my Daughter Malala,” one of the fundamental concepts is that of injustice
demonstrated by unequal opportunities. This has been demonstrated through discrimination in
terms of gender, race and social class. In “Providing psychological services for children of
overseas Filipino workers” the issue of unequal opportunities can be seen by the fact that the
children in the Philippines do not have equal opportunities for other children since their parents
re migrants in other countries and therefore they lack the opportunity to be with their parents. In
“My Daughter Malala” education provided for the male child and female child is persistent and
illustrated directly by the author. It is done analyzing the life of a girl in a patriarchal and
conservative community, who is fighting for the right of the girl child. The writer discusses the
key concepts by incorporating phrases such as father says, “Girls were prohibited from going to
school. Women were forced to wear veils, and they were stopped from going to the markets”
(Yousafzai 2:00-2:23). As discussed in the second text “Travels with My Ex,” the concept of
unequal opportunities is demonstrated in terms of racism where the blacks and the whites do not
have equal opportunities in the society.
Part 3
Similarly, the three authors have comprehensively discussed core problems in our society
as a whole since these three texts are based on different regions and shown how albeit these
challenges with a resolution the objects of study overcome them. For instance, in “My Daughter

Malala,” she can overcome the constraints of a patriarchal society the grief she went through for
being denied her rights. “At five years old, while she ought to be going to class, she stays at
home, and her siblings are conceded in a school” (Yousafzai 0:34-2:25). Also, how she can
advocate for other girl’s rights (Yousafzai 11:12). “I esteemed my daughter. What my dad
couldn’t provide for my sisters and his daughters, I thought I should transform it.” (Yousafzai
0:55 -1:30). Also shown in “Travels with My Ex” Susan Straight does not describe the
difficulties faced by the black people with bitterness or hatred but rather she bears a tone of
positivity that even though these struggles are there with change racism can end. In the text,
“Providing psychological services for children of overseas Filipino workers” the challenges
faced by the Filipino Children is evident. Shown by, “Feelings of loneliness and emptiness
predominate when parents leave to work abroad” (Tarroja and Fernando 204). However, the
authors also show how psychological care provided to these children can overcome these
challenges and view their parent’s departures as a painful thing. “All these findings suggested a
strong need for psychological interventions that could address these concerns” (Tarroja and
Fernando 207).
Discrimination is one of the major themes that is being discussed in all the texts. In the
“Providing psychological services for children of overseas Filipino workers” discrimination is
demonstrated in an indirect manner such that the Philippines parents leave their countries and
leave their families so as to find better employment opportunities abroad. Racial discrimination
is one of the issues that can be depicted from the “Travels with My Ex where the blacks and the
whites do not have equal opportunities in the society. In “My Daughter Malala” gender
discrimination is seen in the aspects of education where the opportunities for the male child and

female child are unequal and illustrated directly by the author. “Girls were prohibited from going
to school. Women were forced to wear veils, and they were stopped from going to the markets.”
Part 4
As illustrated above, these three texts all discuss the issues affecting children in different
parts of the world. “Travels with My Ex” Shows the authors child struggling to cope with her
race. In “My Daughter Malala,” Malala struggles with a lack of education are also shown. Also
“Providing psychological services for children of overseas Filipino workers” describes the
feelings of abandonment that Filipino children go through. The author of “Travels with my Ex”
unlike the authors of the other two texts uses complexity by integrating both past and present
occurrences simultaneously in developing fundamental concept and language. Her use of
language is indirect.
Part 5
Overseas Filipino workers and their children often face emotional situational
circumstances; as a result, social’s cognitive perceptions that ultimately hinder their cultural
adjustment. Articles title “Providing psychological services for children of overseas Filipino
workers,” “Girls were prohibited from going to school. Women were forced to wear veils, and
they were stopped from going to the markets,” “At five years old, while she ought to be going to
class, she stays at home, and her siblings are conceded in a school” and “Travels with My Ex”
provide intuitive readers with an in-depth insight of countless challenges that children’s endured
as a result of parental decisions, family dynamics and social implications. “Brother in law was

stopped… 5 A.M.” this shows that the policeman is racist because he could not find anything on
the black man, so he gave him a ticket. (Straight 207). The unfortunate fact is that children left
behind by overseas Filipino workers requires a structured and systematic process as the
foundational solution to current situations. The ways that the academic text differs from the other
text that is used direct language but the anther text used indirectly. As such I prefer the academic
text as it is easily understandable and it is written in an appropriated context.
