Assignment 4: Wireless Security Issues
Jim was traveling for his job with a company provided laptop. The Internet card provided by his
company was not working and he had an important project due that day. Jim was in a small town
about an hour away from the nearest Internet kiosk and the Internet access in the hotel was very
expensive.
He decided to drive around a nearby suburb to see if he could find a wireless system he could
“borrow” to send out his important project. Jim found a wireless system without a security key
and, after parking near the home with the system, uploaded the project successfully, using about
3 minutes of access time.
Afterward, just for fun, Jim peaked into the computer on the wireless system and found, to his
dismay, some bank accounts and passwords. He quickly exited the system and returned to his
hotel.
When he got back to the hotel, he reflected on what had happened and decided to write a letter to
the owner of the house anonymously and explain why the wireless technology he/she was using
could lead to someone stealing their bank account information and telling them what they needed
to do to protect this information. It is a Linksys router. He used the hotel stationary as it was all
that was available.
Answer the following questions about the case:
1. Was the actions of Jim using the wireless access appropriate (legal, ethical, etc.).
Substantiate your answer.
2. Was the actions of Jim accessing the computer appropriate (legal, ethical, etc.).
Substantiate your answer.
3. What was missing from the system that Jim “borrowed”?
4. Jim had a company provided cell phone to make calls, what additional technology would
he require to access the Internet and upload his reports from remote sites?
5. The project uploaded included confidential business data, did Jim compromise that data
by taking the action he did? What could he have done to protect the information?
6. Why do you think it was good or bad for Jim to send the letter?
7. Draft the letter for Jim to write to the homeowner, how much would you tell about what
happened and how you know his information is protected. How would you tell him, in
layman’s language, how to fix it?
8. The homeowner was very upset when they received the letter, and eporte it to the police.
What can the police do to determine who sent the letter?
9. Can the upload be tracked back to the company?
10. When Jim gets back to work, he explains what he did to his boss who terminates his
employment. Explain why he was terminated.
