Energy Systems and Resources
Midterm Project Instructions

Select any Country, State, Province, or other clearly identifiable political or geographical region of your
choice and prepare a report on it consisting of a detailed analysis of its energy status.

Make your report at least 10 full pages but no more than 20 pages and use the assignment submission
guidelines posted for Canvas.

Your report should address each of the following in addition to any other relevant information that you
feel should be included depending upon the general thrust of your work and unusual things specific to the
subject area. This assignment is intended to be comprehensive and more than just simply addressing the
items indicated below. Extensive research, thorough analyses, and rational sets of recommendations and
conclusions are most desirable. Originality and your individual initiative are also very important.
1.
A summary of the total current energy needs/energy consumption of the area based on the most recent data
you can find.
2.
A summary of the energy mix used the area, i.e. how much energy used is from coal, nuclear, wind, solar,
etc.). This should represent all energy used including residential, commercial, industrial, transportation,
and other uses.
3.
A summary of where the area’s energy is obtained, i.e. how much is generated locally, how it is generated
locally, how much is exported elsewhere, what form it is exported in, how much is imported from
elsewhere, and in what form it is imported.
4.
A summary of how much is being paid to import energy and how much is being earned by the export of
energy. It would be appropriate here to include an analysis of value added import/export scenarios such as
crude oil being imported, refined locally, and then exported.
5.
Projections of where the information summarized in parts 1-4 is going in the next 10 years given the current
situation and official plans for the area. If you cannot find official projections of this type for your area,
then you can make your own informed and logical projections based on any set of assumptions you think
might be reasonable. In this latter case, you should try to support your assumptions and logic with current
relevant facts. This may be hard, but do your best.
6.
Recommendations regarding what future energy mix will make or keep the area self sufficient in energy or
will result in it reaching some desired level of excess energy production.
7.
A reasonably detailed broken down estimate regarding what investments (types and amounts) will be
necessary to realize the recommendations you made in part 6 and what time frame these investments will
need to be made in.
8.
A reasonable estimate of how many jobs may be created in the area as a result of these investments.
9.
A reasonable estimate, if such is possible, of when the area might reach the breakeven point from these
investments where it is energy self-sufficient or when it might reach the desired excess energy production
level desired.
10. A comprehensive listing of all references used. It is understood that many of these may be on-line
references.
Note: There may be lots of assumptions that you will make in this assignment, but always try to state clearly
what is an assumption and what the assumption is. The U.S. DOE’s Energy Information Administration
website and various other governmental websites around the world may have lots of general background
information on energy use as well as area and country specific data. You should avoid relying too heavily
on a very limited number of information sources.
