Paper
Jacob Hacker and Paul Pierson argue, in American Amnesia, that Americans have forgotten the crucial
role that government played in our rise to the world’s leading superpower. The public has, they argue,
been tricked into believing a false narrative that through much of our history, government was small and
let the free market grow with interference. Their argument is that without significant government
involvement, America would never have risen to being the world’s largest economy. On the other hand,
critics of the book argue that the authors do not give fair treatment to why public trust in government is
so low or the recent why expansion of government into the health care sector has produced uneven
results.
Please read chapters 2-4, 6, 9-10. Students are welcome to read more, but these chapters cover the
main argument.
What do you think? Are Hacker and Pierson right or are they exaggerating the role of government?
What evidence do they provide for the role of government in America’s development and is it
convincing? Why do they think attitudes towards government have changed? Be specific about their
arguments and the evidence they provide. Finally, regardless of which side you take, provide at least one
paragraph raising counter-points to your thesis.
Sources:
You must have a minimum of three outside sources, NOT including blogs, Wikipedia, CNN.com or
Slate.com, etc. Sources such as The Atlantic, The Weekly Standard, The National Review, Mother Jones,
The New York Times, Time, Newsweek, The American Prospect, The Wall Street Journal usually provide
analysis of news events (as opposed to the just the reporting of events). Books and journal articles are
excellent sources.
Citations:
Please use the APA standards for citation. This is not negotiable. The American Political Science
Association uses a slightly different format of APA, which I use here, but in general, APA guidelines
should be consulted for any questions. For example, to cite a newspaper article, then, please use the
following format. For example, use the parenthetical citation format.
Some observers of the Supreme Court have noted that Roberts will allow Congress more leeway
to legislate on local concerns than previous Chief Justice Rehnquist (Liptak 2005).
The last page should provide a list of your sources, and the following format should be used (this can be
on a third page in addition to the two written pages):
Liptak, Adam. 2005. “Chief Justice Nominee Speaks Volumes, While Saying
Little.” The New York Times. September 16th, 2005, A1, 17.
