Team Mid-Term – Introduction
This an introduction to the Team Mid-Term assignment, so that you can plan for the work
accordingly. See the syllabus for due dates and the assignment item for full submission
information.
This assignment will take place during Weeks 4 and 5 with the final product due in Week 5.
Therefore, you need to be planning, preparing for, and working on it in conjunction with
your team over those weeks.
Carefully read through the information below, then be sure to address any questions or concerns
early in the course.
Prompt:
Your Midterm submittal is a paper which is to be 10 – 15 pages, double spaced, following APA
guidelines for a formal paper (e.g., title page, headings, font, spacing, etc.). Your Midterm will
be worth a total of 100 points.
You will also complete a Team Member Evaluations from which is due at the same time as the
Mid-term. (See the item in Week 6.)
Your Tasks:
For the content of what is required, follow the sections and steps below:
Section I of Midterm (Background/History; ecological system):
1.
2.
3.
4.
Select a movie as a team from the Film List below.
Complete the assigned readings and watch the weekly instructor presentations.
Watch the film.
Write a brief background/history to the circumstances of the case presented by the movie,
similar to your case vignettes you have been working on (e.g., main characters, history
and relevant issues, etc.).
5. Identify and describe the character’s ecological system (e.g., do they have a job, family,
friends, hobbies, religion, spirituality, etc.).
Section II of Midterm (Diagnosis and Justification, ecological systems, and strengths):
1. For the client chosen in your particular movie, provide a complete and accurate
diagnosis. Give code, diagnosis, and relevant descriptors and specifier(s). * Please note
that you must come to a consensus within your team as you will be turning in one copy
of this exam to the professor with all of the names from the team listed on the title page.
(Think about this from the perspective of being a member of an interdisciplinary
treatment team.)
2. Make sure to justify your diagnosis by linking the specific symptoms to the criteria
they satisfy.
3. Identify and describe the character’s ecological system (e.g., do they have a job, family,
friends, hobbies, religion, spirituality, etc.). Identify/list any client strengths across the
ecological spectrum (micro-macro) that you can utilize to help build a successful
treatment plan. Here are a few examples.
Client Strengths
-high cognitive function (micro)
-recognizes problem (micro)
-high initiative for seeking help (micro)
-girlfriend is supportive(messo)
-healthy family bonds (messo)
-mental health insurance (macro
Section III of Midterm (Causal and maintenance factors, biopsychosocial model):
1. Identify causal and maintaining factors from a biopsychosocial model.
a. For example:
i. Describe some plausible causes of the clinical presentation.
ii. Analyze and describe the different factors from a biopsychosocial model
and how they impact the client:
1. Belief/cognitions:
2. Emotions:
3. Behaviors:
4. Physically:
5. Socially:
(***Make sure that you write this section in the body of a paragraph. Can organize paragraphs
by each area (e.g., beliefs/cognitions, etc.).)
Section IV of Midterm (Treatment plan, legal/ethical):
1. Generate a formal treatment plan that is evidenced-based and utilizes the unique
resources of the particular character. (Remember, your goals and interventions must
follow the SMART acronym)
2. Provide a rationale for the interventions you used by providing relevant, evidenced-based
literature, which not only includes specific interventions, but considerations that go along
with them.
a. Can the studies you are using to show that the intervention is effective be
generalized to other populations or is there a gap regarding what is available for a
specific population? Note: you will need to also research cultural considerations
for this section.
i. Develop at least 3 goals and the supporting measurable objectives that
will help the patient achieve his/her goal(s). (Your treatment approaches
will be included in this section. Remember to capitalize on the client’s
strengths that were identified.)
1. Remember measurable objectives include a) who is responsible for
what; b) what exactly has to be completed (usually this includes a
number to be able to know if the objective has been completed);
and the timeframe for completion.
ii. Provide a rationale for each therapeutic intervention and include citations
as evidence for therapeutic effectiveness. (Include in-text citations and
references.)
iii. Include pharmacological interventions that have been used to treat
symptoms or diagnosis.
1. Utilizing pharmacological databases note any side effects that this
medication can cause that social workers need to know.
2. Explain what you would do should you suspect that the patient is
suffering from negative medication side effects.
3. Consider the ethical, legal and risk considerations regarding this case.
4. After the cases are completed reflect as a group about all the knowledge and skills that
you had to apply in this exam. Then write a few paragraphs about how this course has
helped you to grow as professional social workers and how this experienced has changed
the way you view mental illness.
Note that the fourth section of the exam serves as an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to
provide evidence based culturally competent treatment. The treatment plan should capitalize on
the client’s strengths and culture thus the plan should look different and be supported by
evidence.
