Assignment Instructions
By the end of Week 7, students will submit a document detailing their conceptualization of a
clinically-based case, using information from the course text and the scholarly literature, and
following the guidelines below.
Students will report on relevant aspects of the case history and will apply key concepts from
course material, the course textbook, and the scholarly literature to the case in order to
formulate a diagnosis, a working theory of causal factors, treatment recommendations, and a
likely prognosis. Students will choose from among case studies provided.
Students will have worked on this assignment in three stages: In Week 1, the case was selected
and a topic area from the scholarly literature was identified. In Week 3, an Annotated
Bibliography of the scholarly articles was submitted. In Week 7, the final paper is due.
In addition, as different aspects of psychopathology are covered in class readings and
discussions each week, students should be thinking about how those aspects relate to the case
they are analyzing. By using this step-wise approach, students will experience two
benefits: course content will be more relevant as there will be a specific case against which to
apply it and the writing of the analysis will be easier overall.
Students will write a thoughtful 10-page narrative report, following APA formatting guidelines,
integrating the scholarly literature and information from the class text while addressing the
main content areas described below.

RELEVANT HISTORY and PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Are there any relevant
aspects of the client’s history or the client’s characteristics, as reported in the Case
Study, which might be relevant to understanding his or her current circumstances?
How might you address those? If none are directly mentioned, what aspects would
you want to inquire about or assess?

ASSESSMENT & DIAGNOSIS: Referring to DSM-5 criteria for the disorder(s) in
question, discuss specific symptoms that would lead to a diagnosis in this case. What
type(s) of assessment would be most relevant? Are there symptoms that are NOT
evident that would need to be confirmed? Do you suspect the presence of other
mental health diagnoses?

CAUSAL FACTORS: What theory or theories might best explain the development of
this disorder in this individual? What factors – Biological, Psychological, Sociocultural
– likely played the most significant role in the development of the symptoms as they
are presented in the case? Be as specific as possible.

TREATMENT: Which treatment modalities offer the most likely help for this
client? What specific techniques would be recommended?

PROGNOSIS: Based on your understanding of the case, what do you believe is the
likely prognosis for this client? How would you define treatment “success” in this
case? What factors might influence that success or failure?

Summary
This case study is based on depression which is a mental disorder that is characterized by loss of
interest, persistent low mood towards the enjoyment of daily activities, reduced energy as well as
neurovegetative disturbance hence resulting to varying levels of social as well as occupational
dysfunction. Depression is common among people of all ages and can be classified based on
severity, duration, the degree of functional impairment and the number of symptoms. This paper
will look into Randy’s case since his behaviors clearly indicate that he is depressed.
Case Study Analysis
Just like in the case of Randy, major depressive disorder is characterized by several
symptoms and is usually characterized along the spectrum of mild to severe. Depressive episodes
that are severe include psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations, functional incapacitation as
well as paranoia. Looking at Randy’s behavior, his depression disorder can be characterized as
sever since he shows hallucination symptoms. The fact that Randy left home to live alone in a
cabin in a remote area is a clear indication that he is not interested in social life. Randy feels
disturbed by television and says that television stole his brain. Randy indicates sadness feelings
helplessness or emptiness and this is why he shouts at the waitress threatening to kill her if she
does not kill the noise. The fact that Randy’s father does not want his son to seek help from a
community health clinic since he claims shrinks are for “sissies”, Randy’s condition is likely to
worsen and probably result to behavioral as well as health problems that may affect every area of
his life.
Randy’s depression can be said to have been a result of social factors since he developed
it after his girlfriend broke up with him an incident that also affected his studies. Since
depression can be treated, it is advisable for Randy to seek a combination of medication and
psychotherapy. Depression patients often find relative relief with medication while those who
undergo psychotherapy learn to combat issues that contribute to depression (Kupfer, Frank &
Phillips, 2012). Treating depression is important as it helps one feel much better quickly than
when they are on their own. It is also important for Randy to seek help from support groups and
also learn more about depression as they are significant components of treating depression.
Online as well as support groups within the community are popular methods of finding other
people experiencing similar issues and one can easily connect with them without feeling
embarrassed about his condition. Through learning more about depression, Randy will gain new
ideas as well as more strategies for coping with depression throughout his life (Belmaker &
Agam, 2008). The fact that Randy is on his own, it is difficult for him to maintain perspective as
well as sustain the required efforts to beat depression in spite the fact that the nature of
depression itself makes it difficult to reach o0ut for help. Since Randy has isolated himself from
his family, loneliness makes his situation even worse. This means that it is important for those
suffering from depression to maintain close relationships as well as social activities.
Lastly, although the thought of reaching out to close friends as well as family members
can seem overwhelming, it is advisable for Randy to share his situation with his family members.
Reaching out to close friends and family members is not a sign of weakness and does not mean
that one is a burden to others.

Executive summary
Depression can be described as a mental state characterized by reduced interest in daily
activities, persistent low mood for thrilling events, and negative responses towards social events
due insufficient energy. Depression has been reported to affect people of all ages and the causes
vary from one individual to another (Belmaker & Agam, 2008). On the other hand, some
diseases such as coronary heart disease have been reported as agents that can trigger depression
thus result in reduced individual performance in carrying out daily activities. When a person is
facing depression, the severity and duration of the condition are always influenced by social
factors in the local environment (Kupfer, Frank, & Phillips, 2012). This paper will provide an
annotated bibliography of the various peer reviewed journal articles that highlight studies on the
discovery of remedies for depression.

The main objectives of the authors of this article are to examine the annual prevalence of
DSM-4 Major Depressive Disorder as well as the sociodemographic relations that can
