Abstract
This research aimed to investigate the effect that the use of social media in education has on
teaching, learning, and student’s academic performance. A total of 75 individuals took part in the
study. The participants answered survey questions that study to gain information on their use of
social media in education and how that affected their teaching, learning, and grades. A majority of
the participants reported that they used social media in training. They also stated that social media
platforms were beneficial in academic matters. The number of participants who said that use of
social media in learning helped improve their grades was 40 percent. The other 60 percent thought
that social media had no impact on their grades, had an adverse effect, or were undecided.

Introduction
The current decade has witnessed the rise in the use and number of social media platforms. Today,
there are around 2.46 billion social media users globally (Fuchs, 2017). The platforms consist of
web and mobile applications that allow individuals or organizations to create an account and
socialize with other individuals or organizations that have such reports. Prominent social media
platforms include Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, Tumbler, YouTube, and Pinterest.
Social media has dramatically transformed many aspects of human life. People are increasingly
relying on the platforms to connect with close friends and colleagues. Businesses and other
organizations are increasingly building on the platforms to market their products and services and
to also interact with their clients (Fuchs, 2017). Institutions of learning have not been left behind.
Universities, colleges, and other teaching and training institutions are using social media to
advertise their programs and to also interact with their students. The platforms are also being used
in teaching and learning. The effect of such platforms in teaching and learning is worth
investigating.

Problem Definition and Statement
This study focused on the use of social media platforms for teaching and learning. The users may
be students, teachers, and learning institutions. The method may include communicating vital
academic information, discussing class work, sharing learning materials among other ways. For
example, some students and instructors are using WhatsApp to communicate information related
to a particular course, discuss problems, and share information (Cetinkaya, 2017). This research
aimed to investigate the effect that the use of social media in education has on teaching, learning,
and student’s academic performance.
Importance of the Problem
Investigating the problem of social media use in education is very important because the
technologies have had a transformative impact in other areas of life such as marketing. In
education, the problem is unique. This is because the techniques are helping a lot in facilitating
teaching and learning but have also been known to distract students’ attention and lead to wastage
of time. It is worth investigating whether the pros of using the technologies in learning exceed the
cons.

Literature Review
Introduction
Numerous studies on the topic of social media use in education have been conducted. One of the
earliest studies was conducted in the year 2008. The study looked into the opportunities that
emerging social media technologies presented to the music education curriculum (Salavuo, 2008).
It is worth noting that some of the most prominent social media platforms today had just been
introduced a few years before the study. For example, Facebook was founded in 2004, Twitter in
2006, and YouTube in 2005 (Fuchs, 2017). Earlier researchers judged that the new media would
rise to prominence shortly. Recent researchers have provided empirical data on how social media
has been used in teaching and learning and the impact of such use. The broad adoption of such
media and use for entirely some time is what has made such empirical studies possible. Researchers
have also been able to use such platforms to conducts research on the same platforms. This is
because social media technologies are now allowing users to create a survey and administer such
as survey (Fuchs, 2017).

Over the few years that social media technologies have been in existence, they have gained
credibility (Fuchs, 2017). Individuals and organizations have earned trust in the media and used it
as a platform where they can discuss with their audience. A fundamental cause for the rise in

News sites, professional organizations, experts in various fields and other credible individuals and
organizations have shared valuable information on the sites (Fuchs, 2017). It is this credibility that
has attracted many institutions of learning to use such media in their marketing activities,
communicating to students, improving students’ life among other things. Colleges, universities,
and teaching and learning institution have identified that social media can help make a positive
contribution to their teaching and learning endeavor (Lupton, 2015). Teaching and learning
institutions have gone to the extent of adopting plugins that help in improving interaction with
students. They can use powerful analytic tools to measure the success of their efforts (Lupton,
2015).

The rise in credibility in social media platforms does not guarantee that they are free from fake
and misleading information. The platforms have been increasingly used by unethical individuals
and organizations to spread misinformation and rumors (Allcott & Gentzkow, 2017). Leading
social media technologies are fighting hard to spot and remove misleading information and rumors
from their site (Allcott & Gentzkow, 2017). Some institutions of learning have also been educating
their students on how to evaluate the credibility of information that they access online and in social

Use of Social Media in Teaching and Learning
There are many ways in which students access information related to teaching and learning using
social media. There are also many ways in which institutions of learning distribute search
information using social media platforms. One key way is to share recorded lectures videos on
platforms such as YouTube and Facebook. Nowadays, it is widespread for colleges and
universities to record lectures on video and shares those lectures on YouTube where students can
access them (Alwehaibi, 2015). To access those videos, all the students need to do is subscribe to
the institutions YouTube account and receive updates on new videos or search for such videos
using keywords. Videos have been critical in teaching and learning. Students can pause the videos,
rewind them, and replay as many times as they wish (Alwehaibi, 2015). This way, they can
understand the content more deeply. Distant students can benefit extremely using the information
shared in the form of video in social media (Alwehaibi, 2015).
Institutions of learning share not only course-related information on the video. They also share
information regarding the opening dates, scholarships, and advertisements on the courses that the
institution offers (Alwehaibi, 2015). Chtouki Et al. (2012) observed that YouTube has been
making a huge positive contribution to students learning. The resources shared on the social media
platform can be accessed by many people who are not students at the particular institution that
posted the content. This has helped open access to valuable information to the general public. If
the trend continues, people will become more and more informed thanks to social media.
A second way in which institutions of learning utilize social media to share related learning
materials is to share status updates on social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter
(Balakrishnan & Gan, 2016). The institution may update information concerning opening dates,
lectures, and examination dates using such platforms.

They may also share on social media links to sites with more informative content. Significant
research is now disseminated through social media by sharing links to the findings (Balakrishnan
& Gan, 2016). Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter help keep students up-to-date
on what is happening in the institution and also the market. The institutions are also able to receive
feedback and information from students through comments and replies (Balakrishnan & Gan,
2016). The feedback may help gain knowledge, for example, on challenges facing students and
deal with the problems.
A third way in which social media allows teaching and learning to take place is through enabling
discussions (Cetinkaya, 2017). Some social media platforms would allow for the creation of
private or public groups. They include Facebook and WhatsApp. On both applications, an
individual or organization can create a group where all members who have joined the group can
post information. The groups have been instrumental in learning. Many classes now develop such
groups to promote discussion and keep members informed about class activities (Cetinkaya, 2017).
Students can discuss class assignments or a problem that is bothering them in the groups.
Instructors are also able to communicate to a class as a whole quickly (Cetinkaya, 2017). An
institution does not create most of the groups in social media. Students create them on their own
or with the help of the instructor. A key benefit of social media group discussion is that they are
less formal and therefore students enjoy taking part in discussions (Cetinkaya, 2017).
Almost all universities in the country have adopted an E-learning platform that allows students to
access materials online and also to hold discussions with classmates. According to Benta Et al.,
(2014), the problem with such platforms is that students rarely use them outside mandatory
assignments. However, most students access one or several social media platforms once or several
times a day. This makes such platforms much more useful to in learning outside the class learning
compared to E-learning platforms. Chtouki Et al. (2012) observed that many students usually
access YouTube several times for entertainment purpose. If in turn, they run into a short video that
discusses some subject that they are supposed to learn in class, they are very likely to watch the
video (Chtouki Et al. 2012). The informal nature of social media makes learning much more
enjoyable (Chtouki Et al. 2012).

Connecting with Experts
Many people who are experts in various areas of study have created social media accounts. The
experts use the social media accounts to share information about their field of study (Balakrishnan
& Gan, 2016). For example, famous physicists who have social media accounts share information
about their field in those accounts. The information is shared in an easy to understand way.
Students are following such experts and gaining a lot of knowledge in the process. The news that
students get from the experts helps broaden their perspective on a subject. They are also able to
engage the expert and ask them questions on matters that they need to be clarified (Balakrishnan
& Gan, 2016).
Use of Social Media in Research
Social media platforms have provided academics and researchers another way through which they
can conduct their research. Social media platforms such as Facebook have created a feature that
allows a researcher to create a survey (Fuchs, 2017). Through the feature, researchers can extract
useful data. Students can be able to run such a study and get the opinion of other students on a
particular issue. Institutions of learning can also use the feature to gain input from their students.
Institutions of learning are also able to use analytic tools provided by various social media accounts
to monitor activities going on in their accounts (Fuchs, 2017). They gain insights about their
subjects and can serve them better. Research is fundamental to higher learning as it helps people
obtain new information about the world. It is a good thing that social media platforms have
provided an easy way to run a simple survey.
Benefits of using Social Media in Education
Some experimental studies have looked into how the use of social media in education benefits
students. According to Won (2015), a critical benefit of using social media in teaching and learning
is that it increases collaboration among students. Students can work together on a subject in the
platforms. The partnership can be on revision, doing group work, or just discussing subject matters
that interest them (Won, 2015). Instead of meeting every time in person for group work, some
students are now opting to create a group on a social media platform such as WhatsApp where
they can contribute ideas remotely. Such enhanced collaboration has helped improve teaching and
learning (Won, 2015).

The second benefit of social media that have been observed is that it has helped is encouraging
students to develop a positive attitude on their studies (Won, 2015). Students usually develop a
negative attitude towards some subjects when they find them to be boring. This often happens
when they have to sit through long lectures that discuss complicated matters. Social media helps
make the subject more enjoyable to learn. For example, posting a short video that presents a
complicated concept easily and enjoyable in social media does help avoid students’ interest in the
topic and improve their attitude. Also, discussing class work with other students in a less formal
setting helps develop students’ view of their studies (Won, 2015).
A third benefit of using social media in teaching and learning is that it helps increase student’s
participation. There are some reasons as to why students may fail to participate a lot in class. One
such reason is shyness. Social media enables students who are shy to speak inform of others to
give their contribution remotely. Increased participation helps increase collaboration among
students and also improve their attitude. Involvement in learning is an essential part of education
(Won, 2015). This is because it helps increase the connection between the learners. Increased use
of social media in learning can help improve the vital aspect of teaching (Won, 2015).
Fourthly, use of social media in learning has helped in the teaching and learning of subjects that
require a lot of practical working (Won, 2015). For example, nursing students have to be able to
perform specific medical procedures or operate certain medical equipment (Peck, 2014). However,
there may not be enough time to help the student practice more on performing the procedure or
using the particular equipment. Creating a video of the specific process being conducted or the
equipment being used and sharing such a video on a social network such as YouTube helps
students learn more on their own (Peck, 2014). They can replay the video to the point that they
feel they are competent enough. They can even save that video for future learning. This helps
students perform better in class.
Disadvantages of using Social Media in Education
