Successful aging is a life long process of eating healthy and getting enough
exercise. The younger we start the better but it is never too late to begin the process of
being healthy and live a vigorous life to the fullest. The trend is to become more
sedentary as we become older which brings deterioration of aerobic and
muscular fitness along with a weakening of our bones. It is vitally important to remain
cognizant of taking care of ourselves or we run the risk of chronic conditions such as,
hypertension, diabetes and heart disease.
If parents teach their children from the time they babies to eat healthy, to actively
play and do chores, children are starting off with an advantage in life. Our text, Complete
Guide to Fitness & Health, in chapter 9 we are told to substitute low fat milk for sugar drinks
and one should drink water in lieu of any other drinks. Cutting out sugary drinks cuts
down on sugar, which is not part of My Plate.
Sitting down to family dinner also encourages healthier eating habits. If meals are
prepared there is more thought put into what is being consumed. Taking the time out to
eat together not only increases healthy eating but also family bonding creating a natural
holistic approach to the care of our bodies and our minds. It also helps with teaching
our children how to eat properly by example, instilling life long, healthy habits that they
can bring into adulthood.
However, if you did not have a parent that taught you healthy eating habits or self
care it is never too late. Creating a routine of healthy eating and exercise can be an
incentive to do better. Shopping for healthy food and having it at the ready
can deter those “quick” stops at the fast food places. Pack a healthy lunch for school
and work so that you are not compelled to go out and eat. Take a walk at lunch, in
between classes and take a break from media to enjoy some stretching or the
outdoors. The more we take care of ourselves we minimize the risks of chronic
illnesses, obesity, and feeling lousy and better we will be at aging successfully. It feels
good to do good to our bodies.
