Helpful tip: read over student sample of a short summary and response essay in Reading
and Writing about Literature, 4th edition on pages 59-60.

Use this section to help you with your summary.
Summary tips:

your reader is someone who has not read the book so please be clear in your introductory
sentences
NO more than five sentences of summary—this is a challenge, but push yourself to stick
to the five-sentences as the limit
Use the following pages from Reading and Writing about Literature, 4th edition to help
craft a strong summary: read 55 -56 (start at the heading labeled SUMMARY on page
55)

Use this section to help you write your response. On the back jacket of the hardcover copy of
The Blessings it reads. . .
“Elise Juska is so good at describing people, places, and moments that you not only picture them,
you feel them.” –Curtis Sittenfeld
We have spent the past few weeks writing and thinking about Philadelphia and Juska’s
characters so that you can respond thoughtfully to Sittenfeld’s commentary about Juska’s
writing. Sittenfeld claims Juska is “so good at describing people, places, and moments that you
not only picture them, you feel them”—so the question is do you agree with Sittenfeld?
As you contemplate your response, read Chapter 5 from Reading and Writing about
Literature, 4th edition, “Writing about Stories”, pages 76-79 with special attention on
character and setting.
Response tips:

Introduce Sittenfeld’s comments, use the pronoun she when referring to Sittenfeld
Draft a clear thesis; read pages 26-28 from Reading and Writing about Literature, 4th
edition
Please be aware that you may have a nuanced reading of her work; in that, you may find
she makes you “feel” a very particular place in the novel but not the entire city; or

perhaps she is better at describing interiors (homes, etc.) but not the city overall; or
perhaps she is better at characters than she is places. Your feelings do not have to be as
sweeping as Sittenfeld’s. Think deeply about this question and respond with specific
references. Read pages 30-31 in Reading and Writing about Literature, 4th edition to
help you with this.
You must make specific references to Juska’s work to support your response to
Sittenfeld’s comments; see 146-169 in Reading and Writing about Literature, 4th edition
to help you with in-text citations
