ANALYSIS AND RESPONSE ESSAY
For your third writing project, you will complete a response and analysis. The steps and
associated assignments for this project are listed below. The purpose of any response and
analysis is to share your own personal reaction and impartial judgement of another author’s
argument. While these essays are often filled with disagreement, there must always be a
dedication to helping the reader of both works arrive at a better understanding of the topic. The
purpose of this essay is not to belittle any one perspective, person, or group of people but to point
out the flaws or strengths in one particular argument for the benefit of the author you are
responding to, the reader who observes the response, and yourself.
For this assignment, you will respond to and analyze a single argument and either
disagree and provide detailed support for your disagreement from the primary source (the work
you are responding to), or agree with it and build on the primary sources argument to address a
neglected angle of the argument or continue on to the next logical step. Whatever your
judgement of the primary work, you must add value; pure agreement and summary will be given
a zero (don’t just say “I agree” and retell the audience what the essay said – this will only prompt
the reader to read the original work).
The process of writing this essay is broken up between three checkpoints: rough draft,
peer review, and final draft. Notes will be provided on the rough draft and should be used when
revising the final draft. Authors that fail to view and incorporate the rough draft feedback from
me (not the peer review) into their final draft will be penalized at least 10 points. Essays that are
not analysis essays (either don’t judge the primary work or do not add value through the
analysis) will receive an F (50%). Short essays will be penalized at least 10 points.
ROUGH DRAFT
The rough draft should be 500 words or more. While you may start at any point in the
essay you like, you should make sure that you have included a draft of the intro.
This draft will receive feedback from me that must be used on the final draft. This draft
will be graded based on length, inclusion of the required elements listed, and clarity
(punctuation, grammar, sentence structure does not need to be polished, but should be
understandable).
