This is a 5-page research essay on your approved proposal topic. Note that page 1 is your cover
page. Your essay must not be more than 5 pages inclusive of references.
Essay Layout
Use APA style. It is IMPORTANT for you to look at the format of the essay (found on the dropbox
and “content” tab) labelled “Final Research Essay Format.” The format guides you on technical
matters like organization of the paper, length of each section, citations, etc.
Cover
First, have a cover page where you will provide the following information:
Title of your paper
Your full name
HIST 2020: American History II
Tennessee State University
The current semester
Note: Insert a running head on the cover page. The running head must appear on every page of the
paper. See the essay format for what a running head looks like.
Continue the paper on page 2 under the following sub-headings:
Statement of Purpose (20 points)
Provide a paragraph introducing your research. Clearly articulate:
(a) the central theme of the paper (i.e., what it is all about); and,
(b) the significance of the paper (the impact it would have on the literature of the subject).
Analysis and Arguments (40 points)
At some length, develop your ideas and arguments using appropriate rhetorical patterns including
narration, examples, comparison/contrast, classification, cause/effect, and definition.
3
Conclusion (10 points)
Provide a brief summary of the paper. This section should not be more than one page. Do not
introduce new analysis here.
References (10 points)
Demonstrate the use of secondary sources (books and journal articles) by making reference to them
and citing them appropriately in APA format in the essay and in the “References” section. See the
Essay Format on for the manner in which the references should be written. The use of your sources
must show that you are able to manage and coordinate basic information gathered from multiple
sources.
Additional points for the paper are:
Organization (10 points)
Points are awarded for the organization of the paper. The paper must show that you are able to
order major points in a reasonable and convincing manner. Provide a cover page as indicated
above. For each part of the paper, use the following sub-headings: Statement of Purpose, Analysis
and Arguments, and References (in bold letters and centered). Also, note the importance of proper
paragraphing, pagination, spacing, and font type.
Grammar and Mechanics (10 points)
Points are also awarded for the use of correct grammar and sentence structure, proper diction,
spelling, and punctuation.
Note: The paper requires your own analyses; thus, you should not include many quotes. If it is
necessary to use quotes, limit to maximum of two, and each should not be more than two lines. All
quotes must be in quotation marks and must be cited in the reference page.
General Instructions for the Proposal and the Final Paper
All submissions for the proposal and final paper must be according to the following instructions:
1. Papers must not exceed the page limit.
2. Papers must be typed and submitted as a Microsoft Word Document. No other format is
acceptable.
3. Double-space and use Times New Roman 12-point font size.
4. Submit via the Dropbox on e-learn only. Other forms of submission such as hard copy and email attachment are not accepted.
5. Multiple submission before the due date is allowed. Only one submission is graded. There is no
resubmission after grading.
6. The essay must be your original work. Any material that can be deemed as plagiarized will
result in a zero (0) for the entire paper. Note that e-learn utilizes plagiarism detection software,
Turnitin, which detects all forms of plagiarism.
7. Carefully read over your work before you submit in order to ensure that it is free of
grammatical, spelling, and typographical mistakes. Use the spell-check feature on your word
processor to correct wrongly spelled words.
4
8. Late submission: Submissions after the due dates will receive a 10% deduction for each day
late.
Evaluation
Evaluation (grading) is based on quality of content, factual accuracy, clear logical presentation, and
appropriate references.
