UNIT 9 ASSIGNMENT GUIDE
The Unit 9 Assignment gives you an opportunity to continue to practice your writing skills. But unlike the
other paper assignments in this class, this assignment asks you to write a work document about a
problem an actual company might be facing and to offer a recommendation for solving that problem.
Use the following steps to help you achieve success.
BRAINSTORMING TO FIND A TOPIC TO WRITE ABOUT

You’ve read a lot of different articles and written several papers in this course about issues in
your field of study, and that means you already know a lot about the issues that professionals in
your field deal with on the job. Be confident that you will find the right topic.
BRAINSTORMING is valuable, so try a simple strategy like listing. Take out a sheet of paper, for
example and write the words PROBLEMS IN X FIELD OF STUDY. Then list as many problems you
can think of that a professional or company in your field would have to deal with.
Talk to people. Your friends, family, classmates, coworkers, and professors can help you with
ideas. Just talking to other people can create a list of ideas you might not think of by yourself.
In the Unit 4, 6 and 8 Assignments, you were given a list of blogs and articles that lead to
possible topics in your field of study. Go back to these instructions and check out that list to see
if any of the topics there might be of interest to you.
You can also search the KU library for articles about various problems in your field of study.
AUDIENCE AND PURPOSE and some topic ideas

Once you create a list of subject ideas, think about what you might do with one of the topics.
Imagine you are working in your dream job in the future and think about whether the subject
you are thinking about might be a problem that company might face and that you could help
them with.
Think about your audience and purpose. If you are studying law enforcement and you are
interested in the subject of gang violence, for example, couldn’t you write your Unit 9
Assignment to recommend that the police department you are working for in your dream job
deal with the increase in gang violence in their community (the problem) partner with a local
after school program to create more activities for the teens in your community to keep them
out of gangs (the solution)?
OR, if you are studying the field of education and you are interested in reading for young
children, could you imagine that you are working in an elementary school with low reading
scores (the problem) and writing to that school to recommend a workshop be created to
motivate parents to be more involved with reading to their kids (the solution)?
OR, if you are studying psychology and an issue that interests you is drug dependency, can you
imagine you are working as a therapist and the school where you serve as a counselor has seen
an increase in teens who are abusing drugs in your community (the problem). Could you write to
the principal of this school and suggest that she create a drug awareness program or offer a
class in the dangers of drug abuse (the solution)?
THE WRITING PROCESS

Remember to follow the steps of the writing process to help you to plan, draft, revise and edit
your document.
As with all papers, it may not be focused, organized or clear at first. That’s normal. Revision
allows you to address these problems and strengthen your document
Be sure to double check all assignment instructions and the rubric to ensure you are meeting all
requirements and so you achieve the highest grade possible.
