MYTH OF THE GREAT EQUALIZER
Education: fair game for everyone? Good jobs today require higher education. One can argue if
we all benefit from education the same way. People obtain knowledge differently some hands on,
some visual, which may play a key part in one’s individual education as well. Perhaps students
are just memorizing information just to get through without soaking up the knowledge to make
them complete experts. The idea that “Education Is the Great Equalizer” is a myth. Formal
schooling, location, and self-motivation as well as opportunities given prevents Horace Mann’s
idea from being true.
With Formal schooling one may think education is more important now than ever. One may also
think Education may be growing less important in today’s modern economy. The ways of the
structed learning, non-challenging work and studies, as well as limitations on one’s way of
thinking play a role in this idea. Limiting the information and material that is taught to the
students, as well as wanting the students to act and think in a certain manner when it comes to
authority, our schools are acting as a reform system, Gatto references in his article “Against

their own company, to conduct inner dialogues. Well-schooled people are conditioned to dread
being alone, and they seek constant companionship through the tv, the computer, the cell phone,
and thorough shallow friendships quickly acquired and quickly abandoned.” Once formal
schooling is addressed as an issue, one can truly see the impact that it has on a person’s education
as being an equalizer, while in the same sense promoting self-teachings and management.
When it comes to location and social class Jean Anyon compares different educational teaching
and learning styles from four different schools. working class, middle class, affluent professional
as well as executive elite schools. She found that the schools usually in poverty-stricken

argue that depending on what social class you rank in depends on the type of education you will
receive. Based on ones living, their education experience will set their future up based on the
surroundings around them. If people are living good, they are taught well, respected, and set up
for a successful future then those in the lower social class. This research shows how location and
social status can have a big impact on your education.
In the academic race students compete into, to aim to be successful requires self-motivation as
well as the hope for opportunities offered. To some, education may be a short success, one may
think “It’s not what you know but who you know”. Is it fair that one may get further with lack of
education verses their peers that have progressed further with theirs? You may think due to
personal background someone is a product of their own environment, though one can argue if
true, or not people still want to better themselves if given a chance and opportunity. Marcus
Mabry shows us how this can be true. Marus Mabry’s article “living in two words” tells his story
about both side of his educational experience both on and off campus, coming from a povertystricken living background. Marcus was one of the few people with a background like his who
got awarded with a full scholarship to a boarding school, thus taking him out of his unfortunate
living arrangements during his duration in school. His brother unfortunately was not awarded the
same opportunity being surround by drug influence and crime activity on a daily. Marcus Mabry
could have headed down the same path as his brother, and not taken his education serious but he
was self-motivated to become something of himself and not to become a product of his
Enviromint, while at the same time making his mother and family proud with being the only one
with a higher education. When on break from school and not on campus Marcus Mabry would
go back to his unfortunate living arrangements reminding him each time why he fights so hard
for his education with the opportunity that was awarded to him. For the people like Marcus
Mabry wanting to procced further with their education and careers but maybe don’t have access
to scholarships and / or resources like he has been given, is it fair to assume that some people
never will due to self-motivation? one can argue what we can put in place of trying to avoid the
tide of shallow opportunities not presented to everyone, until finding out a solution education
never truly be equal.

having more say in the education and breaking out of a system that keeps students mentally
