The College began to accept applications for membership in September 2008. Over 20,000 applications for membership

Furthermore a second goal is to be able to shadow people in different positions of leadership so I can utilize those skills
for my professional growth.
My objective is to assist with any research project and contribute with my knowledge and resource from the perspective of

The development of the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice began in 2009, but it
wasn’t until 2011 that the by-law came into effect and in 2017 a new edition was published.
(College of Early Childhood Educators, 2019) “The Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice
sets out the professional knowledge, skills, values and expectations applicable to all RECEs
regardless of role and the setting in which they may practise.” (2019) This document highlights
the expectations to regulate our profession as Register Early Childhood Educators, and it also
helps us reflect on our practice and decision making about promoting healthy relationships and
high-quality care for children.
As a current student approaching a new environment of the internship it is a key to
understand the importance of this guideline and how it provides us with the foundation to act and
reflect as professionals and how do we apply these ethical responsibilities to our daily practice.

to say with confidence that I understand why the code of ethics and standards matter. I have
recently been immersed in more self-reflection and self-awareness thanks to the benefits of my
Leadership Courses, these courses have allowed me to critical reflect why I have chosen this
profession and what are my responsibilities with children, families and the community. But How
can I relate the code of ethics to the internship placement? I have applied for my internship with
the College of Early Childhood Educators, and I have done this because I believe that a student
we can contribute to the sector with our perspectives and resources. Furthermore, as a parent and
being someone that experienced professional misconduct, I can understand how complex it can
be to make a complaint about professional misconduct.
Being able to identify bad practice is part of our expectations but more so is to act to
demonstrate what our values are and what the code of ethics expects from us. This experience
has contributed to the development of my professional leadership and has genuinely created
awareness of how important it is to have in place and follow these guidelines. “As regulated
professionals, RECEs are expected to act with integrity at all times within their workplace and
the community” (“English CPL Program”, 2019) Making the right decision while practicing in the
sector makes us RECE responsible and knowledgeable about the procedures we must take from
reporting and documenting any illegal actions or suspicions that we might have while working in
the sector.
Being able to pursue an internship with an organization that regulates my profession will
further develop my leadership qualities, and it will open up opportunities for me to be immersed
in a new environment and increase my confidence to establish strong professional relationships
and networks. My potential involvement with this organization can also leave a lasting and
positive experience for my future education and career.
