Final Exam: SOC 250 (50 points)
Due by Wednesday, March 20th at 1159pm. No late papers will be accepted.
For the midterm, you reviewed course concepts and theories. The final exam is mostly an application of course
theories and ideas to a film.
Film Review and Application of Theories (40 points)
Watch one of the films below. All films are located in Kanopy (as were previous films throughout the term).
Films

The Illusionists: The Globalization of Beauty
Not Just a Game: Power, Politics & American Sports
Playing Unfair: The Media Image of the Female Athlete
Latinos Beyond Reel: Challenging a Media Stereotype
Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media
Section 1: In 500-700 words summarize the main issues, perspectives, and information provided in the film.
Section 2: Application of functionalism. In 300-400 words, define and explain the functionalist perspective
and its application to the film
Section 3: Application of conflict theory. In 300-400 words, define and explain conflict theory and its
application to the film.
Section 4: Application of interactionism. In 300-400 words, define and explain the interactionist perspective
and its application to the film.
Note: Some theories will stand out and are more applicable than others. Avoid trying to force a theory to fit the
film. If a theory doesn’t fit well to the content addressed in the film, say so by making a case for how the theory
does not effectively relate to the film content. The overall goal here is to (1) review the theory and (2) discuss
its applicability to the film. Focus more of your time and attention to discussing how the theory applies to the
film.
Course Feedback (10 points)
I value your feedback on the course. The only way to make improvements to the course is to hear from you.
I am interested in knowing what worked well for you, any challenges, and ideas you might have for the
course. In addition to responding to the following questions, please add other information you think I might
find useful. (15 points)
1) One of things I tried to gauge throughout the term was general workload. As an online
course, the expectation is that a student will spend more time reading and reviewing
material than would be the case in a face-to-face class. I don’t want to underwhelm or
overwhelm students with the workload. On an average week, how many hours did it
take you to complete the assignments? Did you find the workload reasonable, too
much, or too little?
2) To what extent were the videos posted of me talking about the readings useful? What
other information would you like to have seen in the videos?
3) Each week I provided audio comments on your assignments. The reasons I chose this
method were (1) to provide more feedback than I could provide via written form and
(2) to make a personal connection to you. Did you find the audio comments useful?
Explain what you found useful as well as how they might be structured to be even more
useful. Would you prefer written feedback instead?
4) One of things I’m trying to figure out for the next time I teach online is how to facilitate
interaction between students. Your responses to the following questions will be helpful
in guiding me in how to best approach this goal.
1. As an online student, how much online interaction between your peers are you
looking for? None? Weekly? Occasionally?
2. We had a few discussion boards in this class. Were these useful in both reviewing
and applying course information? Did they assist in integrating you into the class
– feeling connected to others?
3. Any ideas you have about facilitating student-student online interactions?
5) Feedback on the readings. Were the articles informative and engaging? Were they too
complex and academic? Identity 2 articles you thought were the most engaging and
interesting and 2 articles you thought were too complex and/or held minimal value.
Your feedback here will help me sort through articles before the next time I teach the
class.
6) Any other feedback is appreciated.
Extra Credit (15 points possible)
In 500-700 words, respond to the following question: What is a sociology of popular culture? I am leaving the
question real open-ended on purpose. In answering the question, draw information from the readings and
course.
Thanks again for the great term! I appreciate all you did for the course!
