Movie Review Assignment
Assignment Summary: Write two movie reviews.
Due Dates: First movie review: Wednesday, February 20
Second movie review: Wednesday, February 27
Movie Options: With the restrictions noted below, you may select any of the following
movies. The list includes movies assigned for this class and a range of classic, developmental,
and modern vampire movies (Note that this list includes some of the best and some of the worst
vampire movies). See also the Top 10 Vampire Movies video link in Blackboard for a quick
overview of ten of these movies. I strongly suggest you look at the requirements for the movie
reviews (flip side of this page) before selecting your two movies.
1. Nosferatu (1922 silent film),
2. Dracula (Bela Lugosi 1931; view free online),
3. Mark of the Vampire (Bela Lugosi, 1935),
4. The Return of the Vampire (Christopher Lee, 1943),
5. Horror of Dracula (Christopher Lee, 1958),
6. Fearless Vampire Killers (1967),
7. Love at First Bite (1979),
8. Salem’s Lot (1979 movie)
9. Nosferatu (1979),
10. The Hunger (1983),
11. Fright Night (1985),
12. Once Bitten (1985),
13. The Monster Squad (1987),
14. Near Dark (1987),
15. The Lost Boys (1987),
16. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992 movie, not TV series),
17. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
18. Interview with the Vampire (1994),
19. Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995),
20. From Dusk till Dawn (1996 [first one])
21. Blade (first one, 1998),
22. John Carpenter’s Vampires (1998),
23. Shadow of the Vampire (2000),
24. Queen of the Damned (2002),
25. Van Helsing (2004),
26. Underworld (2003),
27. Swedish Let the Right One In (2008),
28. Byzantium (2012),
29. What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
Restrictions: Select two movies that are distinctly different OR the 1922 Nosferatu and the
1979 Nosferatu OR the 1931 version of Dracula and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992). Distinctly
different includes movies from two different periods/ types/ categories. In other words, you may
select ONE pre-1950; ONE 1950 – 1970; ONE 1971 – 1980; ONE 1981 – 2000; ONE later than
2000. You may select ONE comedy/ spoof; you may select ONE that focuses on a vampire
slayer; you may select ONE werewolf/ves vs. vampire(s) movie.
Required Content:
1. Detailed plot summary (containing “spoilers” including how the movie ends); aim for no
more than 300 words here.
2. Analysis:
 Basic information, such as length, b/w vs. color, significant actors, producer(s),
and director(s). Include more specific information as well (if available), such as
production costs, length of production time, problems in filming, filming location.
Include at least one little known fact about the movie (could be a blooper, some
unusual detail about an actor, some legal issue, etc.
 Movie features, such as specific types of special effects especially ones involving
a “break-through” in cinematography or that are specific to a category of
cinematography
 Specific category or subgenre (as opposed to just “horror” or “comedy”)
3. Evaluation:
 Explain your opinion of the movie’s quality in its category (i.e., Do not
downgrade a funny movie for not including horror and vice versa) or its
production date (i.e., Do not downgrade a movie from the 1930s for hokey special
effects)
 Explain your opinion of the movie’s place/ contribution in the development of
U.S. vampire folklore and/or in the development of U.S. popular culture.
Warning: Plot summaries, analyses, and evaluations abound on the internet. Ideally, do not
use any online summary. If you do use information from an external source (such as IMdb for
production costs), scrupulously document exactly what you borrowed, where you borrowed it,
and how (direct quote, paraphrase, summary) you borrowed, as well as including a complete and
correctly formatted Works Cited page. Reviews with ANY plagiarism automatically fail. The
bulk of each review must be your own.
